Let us welcome you to the exhibition of the painter, graphic artist and illustrator Oldřich Kulhánek: Courage and fantasy.
The exhibition will be officially opened on December 12, 2023 at the Czech Gallery of Modern Art, Betlémské náměstí 8, Prague 1, where the launch of this author's monograph will also take place and the first presentation of a previously unknown work by the author - a lithograph , which Oldřich Kulhánek created on a lithographic stone during his lifetime, but which was never published. The exhibition will feature both the lithographic stone with the author's drawing, as well as the created graphic sheets, which were created in a collector's edition of only 100 pieces and were authorized with a legacy stamp by the author's wife.
The exhibition will present cross-section of a lifetime's work one of our most prominent draftsmen and graphic artists of the second half of the 20th century and to commemorate his work during the period of persecution by the communist regime and subsequently the post-November freedom, when he rightfully became a respected and recognized artist again and, among other things, also author of a complete series of banknotes of the new Czech state.
The exhibition will also feature newly published monograph by Oldřich Kulhánek published by the Czech Gallery of Modern Art, which brings the best of his work on 200 pages and you will find a number of well-known and lesser-known works, supplemented by an engaging text by the exhibition curator, Mr. Jiří Machalický. The book will only be available for purchase at this exhibition at a discounted price of 960 CZK .
Oldřich Kulhánek was born on February 26, 1940 in Prague, where he later graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in the studio of Professor Karel Svolinský. He was a Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He is the author of not only graphic forms of contemporary Czech banknotes , created many Czech postage stamps and a vast number of graphic sheets and lithographs. He has received numerous prestigious awards and his works are represented in many world collections. Kulhánek's work was mainly based on graphics and drawings , often focused on human physiognomy and the expression of human faces, which embodied the character traits, living conditions and personal experiences of the characters he captured in his works. In addition to his artistic work, he also worked as a set designer and teacher. He was the president of the Hollar Foundation, which supports, protects and develops Czech graphic arts and drawings. He died in Prague on January 28, 2013.
