Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He is one of the greatest figures in world fine art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings within a relatively short period of ten years. Van Gogh's work was virtually unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). During his life, Van Gogh did not receive significant recognition. Posthumously, however, his fame rose at a breathtaking pace, especially after an exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.
Van Gogh's style most distinctly places him among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly also among early abstraction. His innovative approach to reality changed the perception of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced, from an artistic point of view, primarily the first half of the 20th century. With the will to express his own feelings, he inadvertently became one of the founders of the nascent art movement called Expressionism (like Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).
Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to highlight the splendor of each. Hence the note from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other, so that each one shines even more brightly, so that they contrast like man and woman."
