About the artist:
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He is one of the greatest figures in world fine art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings in a relatively short period of ten years. Van Gogh's work was virtually unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). During his lifetime, Van Gogh did not receive significant recognition. However, posthumously, his fame soared at a dizzying pace, especially after the exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.
In his style, van Gogh fits most prominently among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly among early abstraction. With his innovative approach to reality, he changed the perception of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced the first half of the 20th century from an artistic perspective. Driven by the desire to express his own feelings, he inadvertently became one of the founders of the emerging artistic branch called Expressionism (such as Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).
Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to emphasize the beauty of each. Hence the note from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other, so that each of them shines even more brightly, so that they contrast like a man and a woman."
