Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He is one of the most significant figures in world art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings in a relatively short period of ten years. Van Gogh's work was almost unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). During his life, Van Gogh did not receive significant recognition. However, posthumously, his fame soared at an astonishing rate, especially after an exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.
In his style, Van Gogh most prominently fits among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly among early abstraction. With his innovative interpretation of reality, he changed the perception of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced especially the first half of the 20th century from an artistic perspective. By striving to express his own feelings, he unwittingly became one of the founders of the emerging artistic movement called Expressionism (like Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).
Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to enhance the splendor of each. Hence the note from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other, so that each of them shines even more distinctly, so that they contrast like man and woman."
