Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He is one of the greatest figures in world art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings in a relatively short period of ten years. Van Gogh's work was almost unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). Van Gogh did not receive significant recognition during his lifetime. After his death, however, his fame grew at a dizzying pace, especially after the exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.
With his style, van Gogh most notably fits among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly also among early abstraction. His innovative approach to reality changed the perception of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced especially the first half of the 20th century from an artistic perspective. By expressing his own feelings, he inadvertently became one of the founders of the emerging artistic branch called Expressionism (such as Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).
Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to highlight the beauty of each. Hence the remark from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other so that each one shines even more brightly, so that they contrast like man and woman."
