Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draftsman. He is one of the greatest figures in world fine art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings in a relatively short period of ten years. Gogh's work was almost unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). Van Gogh did not achieve significant recognition during his lifetime. After his death, however, his fame rose at a dizzying speed, especially after an exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.
Van Gogh's style fits most prominently among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly also early abstraction. With an innovative approach to reality, he changed the perception of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced primarily the first half of the 20th century from an artistic perspective. Driven by the will to express his own feelings, he inadvertently became one of the founders of the emerging art movement called Expressionism (such as Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).
Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to emphasize the beauty of each. Hence the note from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other, so that each of them shines even more vividly, so that they contrast like man and woman."
