René François Ghislain Magritte (1898-1967) was a Belgian surrealist painter who explored the relationship between an image, the depicted object, and its naming in his work. His artistic career began in childhood when he started painting and drawing. In 1916, he began studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and started exhibiting his works while still a student. In 1927, he moved to Paris, where he joined the surrealist movement and befriended other important artists of the time, such as André Breton and Salvador Dalí.
Magritte's work is known for its originality and provocativeness. His paintings often feature unexpected combinations of objects and their depictions, raising questions about reality and perception. His famous painting "The Treachery of Images" shows a smoking pipe with the inscription "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" (This is not a pipe), challenging the very essence of the image and its relationship to the real world.
Throughout his life, Magritte also wrote and illustrated books and magazines, and he articulated his artistic principles in writing. His work influenced many artists and remains an important part of global surrealism.
In Bohemia, Magritte's work was well received among surrealist artists such as Jindřich Štyrský, Toyen, and Karel Teige. Their work was influenced by Magritte, and some of their paintings show similar motifs and concepts to his work.
