About the author:
František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, one of the founders of modern abstract painting. František Kupka's abstract work itself had a specific evolution, particularly in the treatment of the theme of movement. Until 1930, realistic foundations were the basis of his non-figurative paintings, but the peak period of Kupka's work represents so-called pure abstraction. Kupka's relationship with music also played an important role, leading to the development of the artistic movement known as Orphism – a movement that brought painting closer to other arts (music, poetry). He spent most of his life in France.
His work left an indelible mark on the history of both Czech and world art. From a commercial
perspective, he is also one of the most expensive Czech artists; his work Conception/Danae
was auctioned in April 2024 for CZK 126,500,000, making it the most expensive work ever sold at auction in the Czech Republic.
