About the author:
František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator, one of the founders of modern abstract painting. František Kupka's abstract work itself had its specific development, especially in the treatment of the theme of movement. Until 1930, the basis of his non-figurative paintings was realistic foundations, but the peak period of Kupka's work is represented by so-called pure abstraction. Kupka's relationship to music also played an important role, leading to the development of the artistic movement called Orphism – a movement that brought painting closer to other arts (music, poetry). He spent most of his life in France.
Through his work, he indelibly inscribed himself in the history of Czech and world art. From a commercial
perspective, he is also one of the most expensive Czech artists; his work Conception / Danae
was auctioned in April 2024 for CZK 126,500,000, making it the most expensive work ever sold at auction in the Czech Republic.
