Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Jewish Belarusian-French painter whose artistic style was influenced by Expressionism, Symbolism, and Cubism. He is often categorized among the Surrealists.
While studying at the Drawing School in St. Petersburg, he met artists of various orientations, which influenced his artistic development. In St. Petersburg, he also first met the artist Bella Rosenfeld, who became his wife. Chagall later moved to Paris, where he befriended Guillaume Apollinaire and collaborated with the Fauvists. In Paris, he began to develop his own artistic style, combining Jewish-Russian mythological and religious motifs with bright pastel colors. His work was influenced by childhood memories and Jewish traditions.
During the October Revolution, Chagall actively participated in events and became an art commissioner in the Vitebsk Governorate. Later he moved to Moscow, and then back to Paris. During World War II, he left France and went into hiding with his wife. After the war, he returned to Europe and continued his work.
Chagall's work encompasses various categories of modern art and is known for its expressive colors and themes inspired by his Jewish heritage and rural life. As an artist, he engaged in painting, sculpture, ceramics, and stained glass, and his artistic influence left a lasting mark on the art world.
