Alfons Mucha (1860–1939) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist and designer of the Art Nouveau period. At the turn of 1894 and 1895, he created a poster for the play Gismonda, which brought him worldwide fame almost overnight and made his name prominent in French society.
