Iconic one-dollar bills that Andy Warhol signed on the front with a marker and presented as his own work of art. Throughout his artistic career, Warhol dealt with the iconography of money, frequently using dollar signs, images of currency, and actual dollar bills in his work. By signing a dollar bill, Warhol effectively devalued it, but at the same time increased its worth, thus creating a tension between artistic and commercial value.
Keith Haring later created banknotes in a similar manner (some they signed together), and after them, many other artists adopted this practice, creating their works on dollar bills and thus altering their validity and value.
