Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent who rose to prominence in the 1980s as a key figure in neo-expressionism and street art. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he showed exceptional talent for drawing and painting from an early age. He started as a street artist under the pseudonym SAMO, under which he created graffiti in New York with political undertones. His paintings are characterized by wild energy, vibrant colors, and a combination of text and image, often with references to African culture and social issues. In 1981, he met Andy Warhol, with whom he created several iconic works. Despite his success, he struggled with personal problems, particularly drug addiction. Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a heroin overdose in 1988 at the age of 27. Today, his works achieve record prices at auctions, and his legacy continues to live on. Basquiat is considered a pioneer of modern art and a symbol of the fight against racial inequality. His work continues to influence artists worldwide.
