About the artist:
František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, one of the founders of modern abstract painting. František Kupka's abstract work itself had a specific development, especially in the treatment of the theme of movement. Until 1930, the basis of his non-figurative paintings was realistic groundwork, but the peak period of Kupka's work represents so-called pure abstraction. Kupka's relationship with music also played an important role, leading to the development of the artistic movement known as Orphism – a movement that brought painting closer to other arts (music, poetry). He spent most of his life in France.
With his work, he indelibly wrote himself into the history of Czech and world art. From a commercial
perspective, he is also one of the most expensive Czech artists; his work Conception/Danae
(Conception) was auctioned in April 2024 for CZK 126,500,000, becoming the most expensive work ever auctioned in the Czech Republic.
