František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, one of the founders of modern abstract painting. František Kupka's abstract work itself had a specific development, especially in the treatment of the theme of movement. Until 1930, his non-figurative paintings were based on realistic foundations, but the peak period of Kupka's work is represented by so-called pure abstraction. Kupka's relationship to music also played an important role, leading to the development of the artistic movement known as Orphism – a movement that brought painting closer to other arts (music, poetry). He spent most of his life in France.
His work has indelibly etched itself into the history of Czech and world art. From a commercial
perspective, he is also one of the most expensive Czech artists; his work Conception/Danae
(Conception) was auctioned in April 2024 for 126,500,000 CZK, making it the most expensive work ever sold at auction in the Czech Republic.
