About the author:

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He is one of the greatest figures in world fine art. Van Gogh created approximately 900 paintings and 1100 drawings in a relatively short period of ten years. Van Gogh's work was almost unknown during his lifetime (only one painting was sold less than a year before his death). Van Gogh did not receive significant recognition during his life. However, posthumously his fame rose at a dizzying speed, especially after an exhibition in Paris in 1901, 11 years after his death.

Van Gogh's style most prominently fits among the Fauvists, Expressionists, and partly among early abstraction. With his innovative approach to reality, he changed the view of traditional Impressionist painting and significantly influenced the first half of the 20th century from an artistic perspective. By expressing his own feelings, he inadvertently became one of the founders of the emerging artistic branch called Expressionism (such as Edvard Munch or Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec).

Van Gogh also used complementary contrasting colors (especially blue and orange) to highlight the beauty of each. Hence the note from one of his letters: "I want to use colors that contrast with each other, so that each shines even more brightly, so that they contrast like man and woman."
