Iconic one-dollar bills that Andy Warhol signed on the front with a marker and presented as his own work of art. Throughout his artistic career, Warhol dealt with the iconography of money and often used dollar signs, images of currency, and actual dollar bills in his work. By signing a dollar bill, Warhol effectively devalued it, but at the same time increased its value, creating a tension between artistic and commercial value.
Keith Haring continued to embellish banknotes in a similar manner after him (some they even signed together), and subsequently, many other artists adopted this practice, creating their works on dollar bills and thus altering their validity and value.
