Iconic one-dollar bills that Andy Warhol signed on the front with a marker and presented as his own work of art. Throughout his artistic career, Warhol explored the iconography of money, frequently using dollar signs, images of currency, and actual dollar bills in his work. By signing a dollar bill, Warhol effectively defaced it, yet simultaneously increased its value, creating a tension between artistic and commercial worth.
Keith Haring similarly embellished banknotes after him (some they even signed together), and subsequently, many other artists adopted this practice, creating their works on dollar bills and thus altering their validity and value.
