František Kupka (1871 – 1957) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, one of the founders of modern abstract painting. František Kupka's abstract work had its specific development, especially in the treatment of the theme of movement. Until 1930, his non-figurative paintings were based on realistic foundations, but the peak period of Kupka's work represents so-called pure abstraction. Kupka's relationship to music also played an important role, which led to the development of the artistic movement known as Orphism – a movement that brought painting closer to other arts (music, poetry). He spent the majority of his life in France.
