KAREL SVOLINSKÝ

Karel Svolinský (1896-1986) was a prominent Czech painter, graphic artist, illustrator, typographer, stage designer, and educator. From 1910 to 1916, he apprenticed as a carver in Prague. He then continued his studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague, where he focused on various artistic disciplines, including painting, graphic arts, and sculpture. He studied under renowned professors such as Štěpán Zálešák, Bohumil Kafka, and František Kysela.

Karel Svolinský's work encompassed a wide range of artistic disciplines. He was involved in drawing, fine and applied graphic arts, illustrations, and stage design. His works were inspired by folk traditions, folklore, and nature. He particularly excelled in wood engraving and woodcutting, creating designs for banknotes, postage stamps, posters, and ex-libris. He was the author of a typeface called "Wenceslas" and created many illustrations and book covers.

He also dedicated himself to stage design and created designs for stained glass and mosaics for various artworks. He collaborated with other artists on projects, such as the new appearance of the Olomouc Astronomical Clock in the style of socialist realism. He was an active member of the Mánes art association and received numerous awards and recognitions for his work. His work references the traditions of Czech fine art and significantly contributed to the development and advancement of Czech cultural heritage.
